Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics from Cornell University in 1992. He joined Beckman Laser Institute of University of California, Irvine, in 1995 and is currently a full Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UCI.  His research experience and interests are in the areas of biomedical optics, photonic materials and devices, biomaterials, and biosensors.  His current research foci are: (a) investigating light/tissue interactions; (b) developing photonic and electro-optical technology such as optical coherence tomography for medical diagnosis and therapeutics;  and (c) integrating advanced optical and microfabrication technology with biotechnology for the development of biomedical MEMS devices.  He has published more than 30 peer reviewed papers and review articles and holds a number of patents in the fields of biomaterials, biosensors, and biomedical imaging.
