Research positions for undergraduate students

Dr. Zhongping Chen's laboratory at the Beckman Laser Institute has two open research positions for undergraduates interested in biomedical imaging and opto-electronic engineering. 

My group focuses on the development of a non-invasive optical method for tomographic imaging of in vivo tissue structure and hemodynamics with high spatial resolution.  The technology, optical coherence tomography and optical Doppler tomography (OCT/ODT), is similar to ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound.  However, it uses near infrared optical waves instead of sound waves.  Consequently, the spatial resolution of OCT/ODT image is two orders of magnitude better than that of ultrasound imaging.  The exceptionally high spatial resolution of phase resolved OCT/ODT allows in vivo “optical biopsy” of tissue structure and physiology.  OCT/ODT is a new imaging modality that has a larger number of applications in biomedical research and clinical medicine.

Candidates should have a background in physics, engineering, or other closely related fields.  The student can work on any of the following research projects:

1.     Optical and medical system development,

2.     MEMS fabrication,

3.     Flow dynamics in small channel of MEMS device,

4.     Imaging processing,

5.     In vitro and in vivo biomedical imaging

Research positions for graduate students

Dr. Zhongping Chen's laboratory at the Beckman Laser Institute has open research positions for graduate student interested in biomedical imaging and opto-electronic engineering. 

My group focuses on the development and integration of advanced optical technology with microfabrication and biotechnology to develop noninvasive biomedical imaging, diagnosis, and therapeutic devices.  The technology, optical coherence tomography and optical Doppler tomography (OCT/ODT), is similar to ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound.  However, it uses near infrared optical waves instead of sound waves.  Consequently, the spatial resolution of OCT/ODT image is two orders of magnitude better than that of ultrasound imaging.  The exceptionally high spatial resolution of phase resolved OCT/ODT allows in vivo “optical biopsy” of tissue structure and physiology.  OCT/ODT is a new imaging modality that has a larger number of applications in biomedical research and clinical medicine.  We used the state of art technology from both fiber communication (fiber, phase modulator, WDM, SLD etc.) and electronic and signal processing areas (wavelet transformation, Hilbert transformation, DSP, optical demodulation etc.).

Postdoctoral Fellow position

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the area of Biomedical Optics at the Beckman Laser Institute and Center for Biomedical Engineering, University of California, Irvine.  Research areas that are of particular interests include the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the integration of MEMS technology with OCT for functional imaging of tissue structure and physiology.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other closely related areas. In addition, they must have experience in optical instrumentation and be capable of programming in C++.  Experience with short pulse laser and biomedical imaging is a plus, but not required.

The Beckman Laser Institute and Center for Biomedical Engineering offers excellent training opportunities for postdoctoral fellows, with state of the art facilities and a highly interactive environment.  The preferred candidate should possess the ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team setting.
